Hammurabi

Recorded name:

Hammurabi was an eighteenth-century BCE Babylonian king, widely known for a large stele inscribed with judicial provisions. Royal correspondence also records activities involving land, canals, and local administration.

The Mesopotamian region he ruled already had traditions of law, scribes, and irrigation. The law stele combines judicial argument with royal proclamation; the existence of provisions does not mean they were enforced everywhere.

CALCULATION

How the score is calculated

Q = 10^(M/2) − 1; Lᵢ = aᵢ × Qᵢ; L = Σ Lᵢ; S = 2 × log₁₀(1 + L).

M is an outcome’s assessed magnitude and a is the person’s allocated share. A standalone score is only a per-item reference; the attributed light from distinct contributions is what can be combined.

02Conditional rulings in the law stele and royal judicial text法条碑的条件式判决与王权司法文本OUT-SL0277-LAW-STELE-TEXTUAL-JUDICIAL-FRAME

Record year-1750

summaryApproximately mid-18th century BCE large royal stele inscriptions containing conditional legal clauses/judgments and royal judicial language regarding property, family, labor, injury, and procedure. Only counts text compilation, engraving, and the visible normative framework; does not claim the world's first law code, does not assume uniform empire-wide enforcement, and does not treat the preface's self-description as an administrative annual report.

M rationaleCentralized, public conditional legal texts provided a cross-case normative and procedural framework. However, distinctions by identity, gender, and enslaved status, together with capital and mutilation punishments, are inseparable severe harms in the outcome's content, and enforcement coverage is unknown. M3.9 is taken on net-boundary grounds. Unknown enforcement limits scope; the value is not discounted merely because the original text was not read clause by clause.

Original Chinese · M rationale

Responsibility and consequences of war and expansion

Reason The conquest and expansion of Mari are documentable political actions, but war, deaths, and removal of archives cannot become a positive civilizational outcome; responsibility and consequences require case-by-case factual ledgers.

Prosperity claims in the royal prologue

Reason Prologue claims of divine grant, provision, water management, and protection of the weak are royal self-presentation. They are already within the stele's scope and confidence boundary; without external administrative corroboration, no separate M is set.

Original Chinese reason
