STARLIGHT · THE CIVILIZATION COMPASS

A measure for civilization.A catalogue of its stars.

One unified measure for civilization answers two questions: where does humanity stand, and where should it push next? It helps young people find directions worth devoting a lifetime to.

Not wealth. Not fame. Only who truly moved civilization forward.

NEBULAE · ENDURING FLAGS

Where civilization wants to go

Before mapping the dark, we need a direction for the light. Nebulae are the civilization-scale goals we continue to catalogue. There are currently 104 flags; each points toward a direction worth sustained work, and its Dark Stars are the concrete problems along the way.

Where civilization is still dark

Civilization does not move at one speed. Some directions race ahead; others have stalled for years without notice. Every Dark Star is a coordinate: darkness remains here, and here a life may be most worth spending.

Selected observations

From catalogued developments, see which explorations are approaching a problem’s core. These records retain their source, date, and assessment so each judgment can be traced.

METHOD · THE MEASURE

Two connected measures · directions and contributions are assessed separately

Start with what a person achieved, how much it changed, and the role they played. These contributions form their score, with the reasoning and sources open for anyone to explore.

E
Frontier
Pushes the boundary of human capability outward. This axis shapes how far civilization can go.
R
Guardrails
Keeps increasing power in service of people. Frontier work without guardrails accelerates toward a cliff; this axis has veto force.
A
Foundations
Lets everyone share civilization’s gains. Frontier work without foundations becomes a feast for a few.
Contributor scores: Q = 10^(M/2) − 1, apportioned by credit share and then combined as S = 2log₁₀(1 + ΣL).
Every score retains its evidence state and gaps. Civilization-wide SCL remains under research and does not publish grades. How scoring works →

Civilization does not move forward by itself.
It relies on a small number of people, at the darkest coordinates, choosing to become a star.
If you intend to spend a lifetime burning brightly, may this measure help you find a direction worthy of it.
