Mahatma Gandhi

Recorded name:

Gandhi was an Indian political activist and an important advocate of nonviolent resistance and non-cooperation movements.

Gandhi's political practice began with the rights movement of the Indian community in South Africa. After returning to India, he participated in leading the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Salt March, promoted hand-spinning and village reconstruction, and moved between communities during the violence of Partition. His political methods have had a profound influence; caste, gender, and early racial positions in South Africa have also continued to be subjects of historical research and criticism.

CALCULATION

How the score is calculated

Q = 10^(M/2) − 1; Lᵢ = aᵢ × Qᵢ; L = Σ Lᵢ; S = 2 × log₁₀(1 + L).

M is an outcome’s assessed magnitude and a is the person’s allocated share. A standalone score is only a per-item reference; the attributed light from distinct contributions is what can be combined.

Record year1929–1931

summaryCombines the salt tax as a comprehensible institutional target, openly announced lawbreaking, a disciplined long-distance march, and negotiating pressure into an observable completed mass-action contribution, extended through organizational networks.

M rationaleM6.1 is assigned on the basis of literature-anchored action design, mass participation, and the negotiation chain. Colonial repression, the movement's not always being nonviolent, risks to participants, and the limits of individual-centered attribution are all included in that scale; independent results or moral prestige do not increase it.

M rationaleAn autobiography, the South African National Archives index, and the Gandhi Heritage timeline support the NIC, publication and settlement, and the 1906–14 action chain; M5.8 is assigned. The primarily Indian community served, early racial positions, and limitations of internal power arrangements all limit M; it does not retroactively claim all South African anti-racism or later influence.

BOUNDARIES NOT COUNTED

Not included in this score

These subjects are recorded as exclusions and are not silently treated as zero or as part of the included outcomes.

Criticism of untouchability and caste thought

Reason The contradiction between opposition to particular violent exclusions and positions on caste hierarchy belongs to the same completed contribution in public thought and reform; one cannot select only its anti-exclusion side. The existing Oxford summary is insufficient to establish that the thought as a whole has a net positive value.

Gender, care, self-discipline, and ashram practice

Reason Existing paper abstracts suggest that women's labor, care, and narratives of national regeneration connect with political practice, but are insufficient to judge participation, autonomy, power, and direct harm; self-discipline cannot be extracted as a purely positive method.

The 1942 Quit India resolution, call, and subsequent movement

1942 Quit India

Reason It is verifiable that the CWC and Congress adopted the resolution, Gandhi issued the call, and he and other leaders were immediately arrested; subsequent action was advanced by dispersed organizers and included violence and repression. Current sources are insufficient to separate the personal call, mass action, and direct harm in judging net positive value; a pure-positive M cannot be isolated from the demand for independence.

Other actions such as Champaran, Kheda, Ahmedabad, and the Harijan tour

Reason The timeline establishes their existence, but it is necessary to determine whether each was merely an application of an already accounted-for non-cooperation method or formed an independent investigation, arbitration, or institutional or service contribution; M is not duplicated by movement name.
