Burnes worked for the East India Company, learned local languages, and was ordered to travel along the Indus and through Central Asia. He recorded his observations in Travels into Bokhara and Cabool, including geography, local life, and political observations. These records depended on interpreters, surveyors, and local knowledge contributors, and were closely connected to British intelligence and expansion in the region.

ASSESSMENT SCOPEWhat this score covers
All included contribution titles and notes are available in English. The complete original text remains available in Chinese; both editions use the same scores and source links.
Uncovered contributions and unresolved harms are not treated as zero. This is not a complete assessment of a lifetime.
1 included contribution has incomplete evidence; the relevant gap appears with that contribution.
Original scope note
This research record currently includes 1 outcome within a limited scope; M and attribution shares are revisable judgments. Uncovered content and negative effects not yet clarified are not treated as zero; specific gaps appear in the item-by-item explanations.
CALCULATIONHow the score is calculated
Q = 10^(M/2) − 1; Lᵢ = aᵢ × Qᵢ; L = Σ Lᵢ; S = 2 × log₁₀(1 + L).
M is an outcome’s assessed magnitude and a is the person’s allocated share. A standalone score is only a per-item reference; the attributed light from distinct contributions is what can be combined.
SCORE DETAILS
1 evaluated contributions

summaryOrganized multi-place itineraries, voyages, and interview materials into a continuous narrative that could be widely read, compared, and cited at the time, preserving a set of 19th-century regional observations.

M rationaleM5.1 is a provisional assessment of the public travel texts' organization, recording, and dissemination contribution. The 1834 original preface and work structure have been checked, and professional biographical history has been used to cross-check identity and itinerary; the original work shows shared sources for the materials and a government-mission context. The figures are not directly established by catalogues or book reviews; textual bias, extraction of local knowledge, and military utility all limit the net knowledge increment.

overlap boundaryTravel materials from 1831–1838 formed the public travel corpus of Travels into Bokhara, including the Indus voyage narrative, and Cabool in the 19th century's thirties and forties. Counts only the contribution of text organization, recorded observations, and public dissemination; secret intelligence, treaties, and invasion preparations are separately pending assessment.

Evidence gapsContent, deletions, local names, and editorial changes across volumes and editions have not been checked volume by volume. Responsibility for posthumous editing and archival selection for the 1842 Cabool has not been established. The original package included an 1831 Spectator review concerning the surgeon James Burnes; it has been excluded and was not used to support judgments about Alexander's work quality or prior development. Specialist bibliographies differ between 1841/1842 for Cabool's completion and first-edition year; 1841 is the year of the author's preface, and book images are needed to establish the first-edition version.

BOUNDARIES NOT COUNTED
Not included in this score
These subjects are recorded as exclusions and are not silently treated as zero or as part of the included outcomes.
Indus reconnaissance, Kabul diplomacy, colonial intelligence, and preparation for the First Anglo-Afghan War
Reason The British Museum states that the 1830 mission was ostensibly commercial but actually explored navigational conditions, and records that it later paved the way for British entry into Sind/Baluchistan and for service as political agent under an installed regime. The delivery directly served colonial military action. Current evidence is insufficient to compare any residual conflict avoidance from negotiation with war, infringements of sovereignty, and human harm; treaty or intelligence success cannot set a positive M.
Central Asian coin collection and British Museum donation
Reason The British Museum establishes only the 1835 donation and an appendix author; acquisition method, local rights, catalogue increment, and the collection's end state are not closed.
Original Chinese reason
British Museum
