Biko was an organizer and writer in South Africa's Black Consciousness movement. He helped establish the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) and worked with community-project staff on clinics, education, mutual-aid funds, and production projects. He died after detention in 1977; Truth and Reconciliation Commission records place his death within a history of injury in detention and state repression.
