George Stephenson
Recorded name:
George Stephenson (George Stephenson, 1781–1848) was a British railway engineer. Beginning with engine maintenance and steam-locomotive manufacture at the Killingworth colliery, he participated successively in the engineering implementation of the Stockton & Darlington and Liverpool & Manchester railways.
There were multiple parallel routes in early nineteenth-century mine tracks, steam engines, and locomotive technology. Stephenson's railway work depended on colliery mechanical personnel, company capital and governors, and civil-engineering and operations teams; his son Robert played an independent role in locomotive manufacture and Rocket's design.

ASSESSMENT SCOPEWhat this score covers
All included contribution titles and notes are available in English. The complete original text remains available in Chinese; both editions use the same scores and source links.
Uncovered contributions and unresolved harms are not treated as zero. This is not a complete assessment of a lifetime.
4 included contributions have incomplete evidence; the relevant gap appears with that contribution.
Original scope note
This research record currently includes 4 outcomes within a limited scope; M and attribution shares are revisable judgments. Uncovered content and negative effects not yet clarified are not treated as zero; specific gaps appear in the item-by-item explanations.
CALCULATIONHow the score is calculated
Q = 10^(M/2) − 1; Lᵢ = aᵢ × Qᵢ; L = Σ Lᵢ; S = 2 × log₁₀(1 + L).
M is an outcome’s assessed magnitude and a is the person’s allocated share. A standalone score is only a per-item reference; the attributed light from distinct contributions is what can be combined.

Record year1821
summaryServed as an engineer for the Stockton & Darlington Railway and participated in bringing a public steam railway into operation. When it opened in 1825, Locomotion No.1 was jointly built by George and Robert; manufacture also depended on company partners Pease, Richardson, Longridge, and others, about 40 craftsmen, factory supervision by Hackworth and Kennedy, and line operations personnel.

M rationaleRelative to the baseline of traction internal to a mine, this project crossed locomotive manufacture, the line, and public operation to produce a visible railway-system implementation, and is therefore assigned M5.6. Early operations were immature, and capital, manufacture, and operations were highly collaborative, keeping the assessment below a grand valuation inflated by back-projecting later railway networks.

overlap boundaryA public steam railway from 1821 to 1825, with George as engineer, Locomotion No.1 jointly delivered by George and Robert, and company capital, about 40 craftsmen, line construction, and operations jointly forming the railway. Locomotion is a component of the line system and is not separately credited with a full locomotive M; the early single track, absence of signalling, mixed horse traffic, and operational disorder are within the delivery boundary.

Record year1826
summaryBecame chief engineer of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1826, responsible for intercity railway line-construction service; the railway company, civil-engineering and construction teams, the Stephenson & Co. locomotive team, and operations personnel respectively undertook capital organization, construction, manufacture, and running.

M rationaleThe L&MR was a more mature intercity railway engineering delivery than mines or early mixed operations, and line construction itself reaches the level of major infrastructure service, assessed as M5.2. Existing sources chiefly confirm the post and division of labour at the time, while itemized civil responsibilities are absent; the individual share is therefore lower and the counterfactual phrasing broader, rather than treating the office as exclusive ownership of the project value.

Record year1811
summaryAfter entering Killingworth, improved pumping engines and took charge of maintaining and repairing mine engines, then built mobile steam traction locomotives for transporting coal; the 1816 Billy was used to haul coal wagons to the Tyne. 04Design and mine use of the Geordie miners' safety lampGeordie矿工安全灯设计与矿井使用OUT-SL0040-1815-GEORDIE-MINE-SAFETY-LAMP
Record year1815
summaryDesigned the Geordie miners' safety lamp, using an oil lamp, glass chimney, small holes for air supply, wire gauze, and a perforated copper cap to control air intake and exhaust, for illumination in firedamp-bearing coal mines and to reduce the risk of naked flames igniting gas. Miners, mechanics, and test-support personnel participated in its formation and use; Davy and Clanny were independent parallel routes and are not included in this outcome's attribution budget. The lamp was cumbersome, gave insufficient illumination, and required careful cleaning; it cannot therefore be claimed to have eliminated mine accidents.

M rationaleThis device transformed naked-flame lighting into a structure with controlled intake and exhaust, providing a practical risk-reduction tool in firedamp environments. It is assessed as M3.6 for specialized safety engineering with definite use but bounded by maintenance, illumination, and system-safety limitations. A safety lamp cannot be equated with eliminating mine accidents.
